Ever and Rick avoid Li-Han at night
Loveboat, TaipeiEver and Rick’s late-night evasion of Li-Han is a brief escape from Loveboat’s rules that makes their growing closeness physical, perilous, and complicated. Ever follows an urge to dance onto the balcony; when a staff member approaches, she and Rick hide on a narrow ledge, holding to a drainpipe until the danger passes. The same episode that brings them close also exposes the difference between Ever’s appetite for risk and Rick’s fear of its consequences.
A Sleepless Night and an Impulse to Dance
Nearly two weeks into Loveboat, Ever still has not adjusted to jet lag, and she has never been a good sleeper. On this night, the song in her head demands movement. She quietly leaves her bed in a tank top and shorts, careful not to wake Sophie, who is sleeping on the opposite bed. The small act of pulling Sophie’s sheet over her bare shoulder makes Ever’s departure feel less like an escape from her friend than a moment borrowed for herself.
The door nearly defeats her: wrenching it open makes a sound that echoes down the hallway. Ever holds her breath and waits, but nobody stirs. Barefoot, she moves across the moonlit tiles by leaping over their stripes and lands without sound. The lounge is empty, though bottles and the lingering scents of beer, rice cakes, and red bean soup recall the students’ nightly gatherings. Ever has enjoyed that sociability, but now she welcomes the solitude and the music carried in her body.
She finds the balcony doors slightly open and steps into the light of an enormous crescent moon. In the humid night air, she lifts an arm and knee and turns a pirouette, ending before the stone railing. The dance is unplanned and private, a response to the sleeplessness and bodily restlessness that have kept her awake. Its solitude lasts only until Rick speaks from the darkness.
Rick on the Balcony
Rick sits on a bench to Ever’s left, wearing a sleeveless jersey, his muscular arms locked around his knees. Moonlight catches his rumpled hair. A clay drainpipe runs down the brick wall behind him. Ever starts to explain herself but breaks off; dancing is obvious, and neither she nor Rick can tell which of them is more annoyed by the interruption.
Their exchange continues in the quiet. When Ever mentions Benji as a possible person to ask about and notes that Sophie says he is going to RISD, she asks Rick not to tell him. Rick promises discretion. The scene offers a glimpse of an easy, private confidence between Ever and Rick, but it is still bounded by the rules of the program and by their awareness that being found together could have consequences.
The Drainpipe and the Narrow Ledge
A hinge creaks down the hallway, followed by approaching footsteps. Ever springs to her feet. It is late, she and Rick are together, and she is wearing only a skimpy tank top; if they are caught, she fears they may be punished. She bolts toward the clay pipe, trips over Rick’s outstretched legs, and reaches for it over the railing.
The pipe descends from the roof, two stories above, to the ground. Ever tests its solid, rough surface, which is broad enough for her hands to grip, and sees that a narrow ledge crosses the wall halfway down. Beyond it, the drop to the courtyard and the concrete steps leading to the main entrance is three stories. Rick questions whether she is really going to climb down, but Ever has already mounted the railing and seized the pipe. Bracing against the brick wall for footholds, she lowers herself until she reaches the ledge; a stain of bird droppings on the bricks is inches from her nose.
Ever steps sideways onto the narrow ledge, balancing on her toes. Rick follows, and his bulk throws her off balance. He catches her by the shoulders and draws her against his side, holding the pipe for both of them. The sudden closeness is practical as well as intimate: Rick steadies Ever because they are exposed on a precarious foothold, while the physical contact makes their shared danger impossible to mistake for ordinary banter. Ever’s heart pounds, and she is aware of Rick’s warmth and the smell of grass and toothpaste as they try not to make a sound.
Hiding from Li-Han
Rick’s arm tightens in warning when Li-Han appears above them in paisley pajamas. He stands at the balcony railing, looking up at the moon, with a short green can of Pringles in his hand. The light reflects off his glasses. Ever and Rick are in plain danger of being discovered if he looks down.
Ever presses closer to Rick and holds her breath. They sweat against his jersey; his hand squeaks on the pipe, and both tense. Li-Han stays above them, eating chips—one, then another—without noticing the pair beneath the balcony. The suspense turns on a small, involuntary sound: a pebble pings and clanks down the steps, and Rick’s fingertips dig into Ever’s shoulder. They remain still while Li-Han continues eating.
Only after Li-Han leaves and his footsteps fade does Ever release her breath. She nods at Rick’s questioning look. He climbs back up the pipe hand over hand, and Ever follows; once she reaches the balcony, Rick grabs her wrist and pulls her over the railing. Their return completes the escape, but it does not settle how they feel about the risk they have just taken.
Relief and Reproach
Ever laughs softly with relief and calls what they have done crazy. Before she can finish saying she cannot believe they managed it, Rick releases her abruptly. She stumbles backward and catches herself on the stone railing. The shift is sharp: the same Rick who held her securely on the ledge now withdraws at once that the danger has passed.
Rick objects that Ever could have gotten them into trouble. They might have had their parents called or been kicked out of the program. His response places the near-discovery in the context of Loveboat’s discipline and the stakes of their stay, rather than treating it as a harmless adventure. The episode ends with their relief checked by his reproach. Rick has shared the danger and helped Ever through it, but he does not let their physical closeness erase the consequences he believes her impulsiveness could have brought down on them both.
